Potential Uranium Exposure from Food Crops Produced in the Lower Colorado River Region
Charles A. Sanchez, University of Arizona, Yuma, AZ, Robert I. Krieger, University of California-Riverside,
Riverside, CA, and John Chesely, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ.
The Colorado River has detectable levels of uranium. The river is used both as a source of drinking water
and a source of irrigation water for food crops produced in the in the southwestern United States.
In fact, over 90% of the cool season vegetables consumed in the United States during the winter months
are produced in the lower Colorado River region. Uranium is of health concern as a potential carcinogen
and causal agent of kidney dysfunction. The objective of these studies was to evaluate potential human exposures
to uranium from food crops irrigated with Colorado River water. The major food commodities produced
in the region were sampled from agricultural production fields in Arizona and California, freeze dried, ground,
and digested using nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Uranium contents of irrigation water and food crop digests
were determined by inductively couple plasma/ mass spectroscopy. The uranium content of the Colorado River increased
from <0.05 μg/L at the head waters near Grand Lake, Colorado, to values greater than 3 μg/L after descending
onto the Colorado Plateau. The uranium content of Colorado River water diverted for irrigation
in Arizona and California ranged from 3 to 5 μg/L. The uranium content of food crops irrigated
with Colorado River water ranged from below detection for some fruit crops such
as dates (Phoenix sylvestris) and citrus (Citrus sp.) to 16 μg/kg fresh weight for leafy vegetables
such as spinach (Spinacia oleracea). Potential uranium exposures from the consumption of individual food crops
produced with Colorado River water are very low (<1%) relative to the EPA Reference Dose of 3 μg/kg body weight-day.
Estimates of cumulative exposure by age and gender will be reported. Other potential source contributions of uranium to edible crops,
such as fertilizer, will also be addressed.

In the 1990s, my research team found uranium concentrations many times over the regulatory maximum contaminant level
for safe drinking water in Horn Creek, one of the many side canyons of the Grand Canyon which drain to the Colorado River.
This creek is directly below the site of the abandoned Orphan Uranium Mine, which operated on the rim of the Grand Canyon
from the late 1940s to 1970. Horn Creek’s aqueous uranium isotopic ratio, like a fingerprint,
links mining activity to its high uranium concentrations in water. In the US the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention note that ingested uranium can increase a person’s risk of kidney damage and estimated lifetime risk of cancer.

Ocean disposal of radioactive waste
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to search
From 1946 through 1993, thirteen countries used ocean disposal or ocean dumping as a method to dispose of nuclear/radioactive waste.
The waste materials included both liquids and solids housed in various containers, as well as reactor vessels,
with and without spent or damaged nuclear fuel. Since 1993, ocean disposal has been banned by international treaties.
